Video contest: Climate MattersBrighter Planet and 1Sky are inviting Americans everywhere to participate in a contest to inspire our political leadership on climate change. Check out our video contest “Climate Matters: Inspire your Next President” starting today and running through September 22nd. The top ten videos will be selected based on most views per day, and our judges will pick the top three, which we'll distribute all over Capitol Hill. The judges include award-winning filmmaker Rory Kennedy, Bowling for Columbine and Fahrenheit 9/11 producer Tia Lessin, journalist Anya Kamenetz; and actress Maggie Gyllenhaal. The 1st-place video will receive a Brighter Planet™ Visa® Gift Card prize of $3,000, 2nd and 3rd place will walk away with $1000 and $500 gift cards. We're also raffling a Canon VIXIA HV30 HDV camcorder for contest viewers. Help us spread the word!
He said, she saidWith 8 months under our belt, we recently surveyed some Brighter Planet customers. We reached out to those who set up a My Brighter Planet profile and linked their Visa card (leaving out family and friends who might be admittedly biased.) We learned, for instance, that 92% used their Brighter Planet Visa for all types of purchases. Here are some of our favorite replies to “If you were telling your best friend about Brighter Planet, what would you say?”
If you weren't included in this survey, we'd still love your feedback! Just hit reply and send in your comments.
Concerts on the Green, going greenerA highlight of summer in Vermont is the music series at Shelburne Museum. We teamed up with Higher Ground, the event hosts, to make the concerts a little greener by offsetting carbon footprint of the six-night series. We've seen Feist and Michael Franti with Spearhead so far, and there are three more to come in July and August. Be sure to stop in at our big green tent if you happen to go! —the team at Brighter Planet |
July's conservation tip is to make meat meaningful. Going vegetarian is a good way to lower your carbon footprint, because the meat industry is full of heavy carbon-emitters. But if you can't quit cold turkey (ha!), we recommend that you try changing your relationship to meat eating. A recent NY Times article has 7 tips for doing just that. As Bill McKibben said recently on our blog, "We need to [treat] meat … the way most of the world’s cuisines do—as a flavor, not a big honking slab." Find this tip useful? Come check out our library of over 100 conservation tips. You can even make a badge for your site.
