The big 50Congratulations to our Brighter Planet members who have offset fifty million pounds of CO2. That fills the volume of twelve Empire State Buildings. It's like powering all the electricity in the US for five minutes. Or one day of all flights to and from New York City airports. Or three days of all travel on Highway 101 in LA County. Or nine million bags of trash not rotting in landfills. Brighter Planet offsets fund well-vetted American renewable energy projects. Congratulations and thank you for taking fifty million smarter steps for a healthy environment.
Inspiring ObamaThose of you who have been following the Climate Matters video contest that we organized in partnership with 1Sky will know that its goal is to inspire our next president to take action on climate change. Last week, we sent these four winning videos to each presidential campaign:
We'll also be sending these videos on to all members of Congress and broadcasting them to millions of Americans. We encourage all of you to take a stand too: embed these videos on your blogs and social network profiles to help inspire your friends and neighbors. Here's to hoping our winning videos will help keep climate change a top issue in President Obama's administration.
Green Turkey DayThere are so many smart ways to green your Thanksgiving feast (see the sidebar), but most likely you are getting to that meal by plane or car, which of course emits carbon dioxide and contributes to global warming. Americans travel an average of 438 miles over Thanksgiving weekend. We invite you to cancel out the environmental impact of your holiday with our Thanksgiving Planet Shares. That way, you can give thanks for all we have today by contributing to a clean-energy tomorrow. —the team at Brighter Planet |
This month's conservation tip is about one of the most enjoyable things about the holiday season: the food. Choosing to buy locally grown food is one good way to have an eco-friendly, healthy Thanksgiving. It requires less fuel to reach store shelves and usually has little to no packaging waste. Locally grown food also supports your local economy. Check out this video we made at our local farmers' market. Our latest guest blog post is from an avid New England localvore, and includes a list of where to get locally-raised turkeys from Connecticut to Maine. |
